2026 Canada SDS: IELTS, GIC, and Eligible Schools vs Regular Study Permit

Overview of the SDS Channel in 2026

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) remains a dedicated study permit channel for applicants from select countries. In 2026, the key updated details include the required IELTS score, the guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) amount, and the list of eligible post-secondary institutions.

Updated IELTS and GIC Requirements

For 2026, applicants under the SDS channel must meet a minimum IELTS score. The current requirement is an overall band score of 6.0, with no individual band lower than 5.5. In addition, the GIC amount has been updated to CAD 20,635. This figure represents the funds that must be deposited as a guaranteed investment certificate to demonstrate financial capacity.

Eligible Institutions and Program Types

SDS is open to applicants who have been accepted into a designated learning institution (DLI) that participates in the channel. The eligible institution list includes Canadian universities and colleges that are approved for SDS. Only certain post-secondary programs are covered, typically those leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. The list is maintained by the Canadian government and can be verified through official DLI listings.

Advantages Over the Regular Study Permit Process

Compared with the regular study permit process, the SDS channel generally offers faster processing times for applicants who meet all eligibility criteria. Because SDS applicants pre-purchase a GIC and demonstrate language proficiency upfront, the application is often processed more efficiently. However, SDS is not available to all applicants; it is limited to legal residents of specific countries. The regular process remains available for those who do not qualify for SDS.
